How long does it take to learn Tamil?

There is no single honest number. How long it takes to learn Tamil depends on what you want to do with it, how much time you give it each week, and what you already know. Reading the script is the first step, and it takes far less time than speaking well.

What about official estimates?

You may have seen tables that say how many hours a language takes. The best known one comes from the US Foreign Service Institute, which trains American diplomats. It sorts languages into groups by how long its students usually need to reach a good working level. Its current list does not name Tamil. It also says that the real time depends on the learner's natural ability, their experience with other languages and the time they spend in class. So we do not give you a number of hours here. Any number would be a guess.

What it depends on

Your goal. Reading a menu, chatting with your grandparents and reading a novel are very different goals. Decide what you want first. A small, clear goal is reached much sooner than "fluent".

Your time. A little every day works better than a lot once a week. Twenty minutes each morning keeps the letters and words fresh in your mind.

What you already know. If you grew up hearing Tamil at home, you already know many words and sounds. If you speak another language from South India, some words will look familiar. If English is your only language, Tamil grammar will feel new at first, because it works in a different way.

Spoken and written Tamil. Tamil is written in one way and spoken in another, and the spoken form also changes from place to place. Plan to learn both, step by step.

Practice with people. Talking with Tamil speakers, even a little, speeds everything up. Songs and films help too.

A good order to learn in

  1. The script. Start with the Tamil script. You learn 30 main letters and a few rules, and then you can read every letter. The script quiz helps you practise.
  2. Simple sentences. Learn the word order and how sentences without a verb work. With these you can already say a lot.
  3. Nouns and verbs. Then learn how nouns and verbs change their endings. This is the heart of Tamil grammar.
  4. Questions. Learn the question words so you can ask and answer.

Take it one step at a time. Each step gives you something you can use right away.
