Directions

These are the Tamil words you need to ask the way and to understand the answer: here and there, left and right, straight on, near and far, in front and behind, and the four points of the compass. They are useful in a bus station, in a market or when a relative explains how to find their house. The set starts with the words you hear most when someone gives directions and ends with north, south, east and west. A tip for remembering them: the next time you walk somewhere you know well, say each turn to yourself in Tamil, such as left, right or straight on.
